This is all hogwash and just a coincidence. This reddit discussion argues something similar Does anyone else find it odd that the games that match most thematically come from the same (general) geographic region? Furthermore, this would suggest that either due to cultural fascination, or attempt at imitation of similar local media, similar themes emerge. Particularly, this would suggest that eastern European Game devs are more interested in focusing on this type of depressing atmosphere, and value atmosphere, visual storytelling, and ambiguous characters in the art (as one might argue that Japanese game developers value high skill and coordination in game design, or Americans valuing making lots of money /s). These games are similar because of cultural interests, and similar opinions on what is important in media. My Train of thought boils down into two groups, it's not a coincidence and eastern European games really are more likely to end up with these qualities due to cultural values (such as playing trendsetting eastern European games), and no it is just a coincidence and similar thing could be said about western games if a small enough sample size was observed. I am not an eastern European, nor do I proclaim to be knowledgeable about Eastern European culture in any form, so I was curious about your thoughts on the subject. Color pallet, environment as a character, depressing and deceptive characters, oppressive worlds (either plague, or radiation etc), all seem to be similar themes, and I was wondering if this is a cultural thing or just a coincidence. While I have yet to play these games, (I need to finish Darkwood, so please mark spoilers), because I am broke, yet I have seen numerous similarities in my research. This trend obviously started with Darkwood, but in my research into similar media, I came across games like Pathologic (which is getting a really cool looking reboot), Stalker, and Metro (kinda a stretch in terms of dark wood but close enough that it applies), all of which are Russian or Eastern European games, and all of which have similar atmospheres and or tones. I have been doing some research and have noticed that I have been attracted to many eastern European games, without even realizing this.
